StandUp Blue Springs Princess Party – Save the Date!

by Jeff Quibell 1. March 2010 10:57

Please SAVE THE DATE:  StandUp Blue Springs’ annual Princess Party to benefit Dental for Kids will be held Saturday, Oct 2, 2010 at Valley View High School in Blue Springs.  We need 200 volunteers and many donors, so please commit today to assisting with planning, fundraising, Friday set up and/or the Saturday event.

The Princess Party is held on the same weekend as this year’s Wall That Heals.  Please consider supporting both events in some way.  We realize it will be a busy week, but StandUp anticipates more than 700 little girls and their adult royal companions to join us for the Princess Party, which requires 2 days’ set-up, 200 volunteers and a two-story castle façade!  While we are not competing for the same “audience,” we will both draw adult and student volunteers from the Blue Springs community.  Both are worthwhile events; we hope you can support both.

Ward Park- The city is taking advantage of federal stimulus funds to renovate and widen the one mile walking trail at Ward Park.  The project work will begin in March/April and be completed by mid-summer.

NEW Disc Golf Course is nearing completion.  The course will be a co-host location for a May 23rd & 24th tournament in conjuction with Lee's Summit Disc Golf Course, the first collabortion between the two departments.

June 6th is the date set for the dedication of the walking trail at Greg Grounds Park.  The trail is already seeing lots of use!

Roscoe also gave an update on "The Wall That Heals" exhibit that will take place at Pink Hill Park from September 30th to October 3rd, 2010.  This will be a huge community event that will require many volunteers- a great opportunity for your civic organization to be involved in a great community-wide activity!

The Roundtable meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month.  You are invited to attend and share your group's activities and discuss relevant community issues!

If you would like to share information through The Roundtable, you may either bring that information to a scheduled meeting or email your communication to me at bessmann@adamspointecc.com.  I will be glad to share that information with the group and via email.

Sincerely,

Community Volunteer Opportunities

by Jeff Quibell 22. February 2010 10:21

This volunteer opportunity has been cancelled.  I will repost it in the future when it is rescheduled. - JDQ 2/25/2010

The following letter to the community is from Jeanie McCoy:

Hello friends,

My Church, Timothy Lutheran is having a volunteer day on Sat. the 27th at different locations, I was put in charge of Impact Ministries to help get their new location ready at White Oak Shopping Center, and out of our large church only 7 signed up to help on my team, ( I was warned that Lutherans don't like to Paint!!!????, whoever heard of such a thing?) anyway Impact Ministires was told we would have 30 volunteers, (not by me). So if you or anyone you know would like to help the community and have some spare time Sat. the 27th from 9am to Noon, let me know. Looks like we will be painting etc., see below.

Impact Ministries, provides many things to those in need in the area, including, food assistance, help with utilities etc. this is through the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, see website for more on this charity, needless to say it would be great to gather all of us from different denominations to join in helping the community.  http://fbcbluesprings.org/293130.ihtml

As you will see below Timothy is serving A continental Breakfast before hand and lunch afterwards, this is optional but we would love to have you all join us, and I will be there. The volunteer time is about 3 hrs.

Do not feel you have to do this, I just thought I would throw it out there, and you only need to contact me if you want to join in an feel free to pass it on.

See all info below sent to me.

Jeanie:
I heard back from Kim at the Impact Ministry yesterday.  She said we will be cleaning, preparing walls for painting and then painting if volunteers/time allows.  She asked that we bring shop vacs, ladders/step ladders (to clean up high on the walls).  I spoke with our Serve Team and we would like to limit the number of volunteers that have to supply these items.  I know Steve Jorgensen, myself and the Wands all have these items we will plan on supplying for use.  If you have these also that would be good to bring and then if we need to ask a couple of volunteers we can do that...but we want to make it as easy as possible on them to participate...do you agree?
She said to also encourage people to bring water bottles if they'd like, and you can bring a radio for music too (for some good sound).  The other thing she mentioned is if we know of anyone that knows how to operate a paint sprayer...if so, they would rent one for the volunteer to use...so if we find someone we're supposed to let her know.  She will also supply other paint supplies (brushes, rollers, etc).
She clarified that the location is right next door to Big Lots off 7 Hwy.  She said they have big glass doors, no sign.

Thank You!

Jeanie

Blue Springs Rotary supports Haiti Relief Efforts

by Jeff Quibell 13. February 2010 14:50

On February 10, 2010, Jeanne Schmick spoke to the Blue Springs Rotary Club. Jeanne is a medical paramedic with LifeFlight air ambulance in Blue Springs. Jeanne has been an EMT for the past 20 years caring for the critically ill and injured. Jeanne was part of the Rotary Group Study Exchange team to Africa in 2009.

Jeanne came to the Blue Springs Rotary Club this week with a request that she needs small stuffed animals to take on her medical trip to northern Haiti. Jeanne leaves Friday to assist with the victims of the January 12th, 2010 earthquake. She is going to work at a small hospital through the Center for the Rural Development of Milot (CRUDEM)Foundation. The hospital in Milot has 73 beds and after the earthquake is caring for about 1000 patients, many of which are in tents on the surrounding grounds. Jeanne gave a short presentation to Rotary about the medical conditions there and the amputations which need to be performed.

The Blue Springs Rotary members are supporting Jeanne in her travels to Haiti by donating over $600 in cash and by sending 60+ stuffed animals and 80+ baby receiving blankets with her. To see a video about the hospital see http://vimeo.com/9236856 (viewer discretion is advised).

Professional conduct in a tough job

by Jeff Quibell 5. February 2010 12:00

Jeff2007 The Blue Springs Citizens Police Academy consists of a nine-week course designed to give residents an inside look at how the Police Department operates. Wanda and I are participating in the academy together this winter and have found it to be an enjoyable experience. This past weekend, I had the privilege of riding along with one of our officers and participating in a “normal” day with a Blue Springs police officer.

One consistent area of concern on our citizen surveys has been the visibility of officers in our neighborhoods. As a City Council member, I received numerous calls from constituents who wanted to know why they “never” saw our police in their neighborhood. During my ride-along, we visited many subdivisions multiple times during our shift, patrolling the streets and neighborhoods. I find it comforting to know that our police officers are actively watching out for us and are nearby when we call for help.

In addition to general patrolling and the occasional traffic ticket, we also responded to several dispatched calls: a domestic disturbance case of a woman and her soon to be ex-husband who had violated a full order of protection; a few teenagers who had broken a bench in front of a store by jumping on it with their skateboards. We reminded the juveniles of the skate parks built for such purposes, and the store owner did not choose to press charges. We listened over the scanner to a “pants on the ground” incident regarding a customer in Wal-Mart that had a problem with droopy drawers, all in a day’s work.

Finally, I had the opportunity to observe as our officers tried to serve a felony warrant to an individual wanted on multiple DWI charges. The professionalism exhibited by our officers as they approached the house and talked with the occupants was impressive and reinforced my high opinion of our police force.

The Citizen’s Police Academy is open to all residents of Blue Springs, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about our Police Department. If you have questions or want to participate in one of the classes, contact the crime prevention supervisor, Sgt. Allen Kintz, at (816) 228-0178 or akintz@bluespringsgov.com.
