Blue Springs Freshman Center Receives National Award for Excellence in STEM Education

by Jeff Quibell 30. November 2011 11:26

Hello Advisory Partnership Team Members!

Missouri’s Department of Education just released the following announcement on their website - http://www.dese.mo.gov/news/2011/pltw.htm - so we had to share this great news with you!  Our Career Tech programs at the Blue Springs School District are successful because of the part you play in assisting us develop and maintain standards of excellence with current trends in your area of expertise.  Thanks for your time and effort in keeping Blue Springs at the top!

Blue Springs Freshman Center Receives National Award for Excellence in STEM Education

The Blue Springs Freshman Center has received national recognition for its Project Lead The Way biomedical program, state education officials announced today.

Project Lead The Way recently released its list of 2010-11 Model Schools, the most coveted award the organization hands out annually.  The Blue Springs Freshman Center is one of just 16 schools to receive the award this year out of the 4,200 eligible schools across the country.

PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides high-quality, engaging education programs for middle and high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“The Blue Springs Freshman Center is to be commended for its leadership in science and biomedical education,” said Sharon Hoge, assistant commissioner with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  “This program is providing its students with excellent hands-on learning experiences that will inspire and unlock their potential as they explore and develop skills in bioscience-related fields.”

Model schools were selected based on their strength in several key categories, including a robust program implementation, excellent postsecondary relationships, outstanding communications and outreach, solid professional development and a strong level of student engagement.  Schools with the greatest overall scores were selected as Model Schools.

The Blue Springs School District, a district of 14,300 students located about 20 miles east of Kansas City, was among the first in Missouri to have certified PLTW biomedical programs.  Statewide, participation in PLTW biomedical programs has nearly doubled over the past two years — from 14 schools in the 2009-10 school year to 27 schools this year.

The Blue Springs Freshman Center began its biomedical sciences program in 2008, and enrollment in the program has increased from 111 students last year to 154 this year.  Through such courses as principles of biomedical sciences, students are introduced to fields such as physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health.

Originally known for its pre-engineering curriculum, Project Lead The Way has been growing in Missouri since 2002.  This year, 148 Missouri schools are offering PLTW programs in pre-engineering, technology and biomedical fields.

Was Convention Worth The Cost?

by Jeff Quibell 16. November 2011 10:00

75ES3358 4x5 @ 72 ResLast week five of our six members of the Blue Springs City Council traveled to Phoenix for the annual National League of Cities Congress of Cities. Thousands of local officials from across our nation gather each year to discuss issues facing our cities, study solutions to the challenges and share successes.

(Councilman Dale Carter was unable to attend as he was in Indianapolis supporting his youngest son’s final competition as a member of the Blue Springs High School Golden Regiment at the National High School Marching Band Championships. The band placed second in their class and 16th overall!)

Upon returning, a Blue Springs resident asked me: “Do you believe the money the city pays for your week in Arizona to be worth the knowledge?” And “Do you find it difficult to attend these conferences in these tough times?” Sincere thanks to this resident for caring enough to ask this important question and for providing the topic for this week’s article.

To the first question, my response was “Yes, I do believe it to be worth the knowledge.” To the second, I replied, “No, I don’t find it difficult.” The investment is small and the return on that investment can be very significant in terms of knowledge and experience gained.

Elected officials should always seek opportunities to expand their awareness of solutions available to them, and find workable resolutions to the challenges that face us. By participating in these seminars and meeting with fellow leaders from across the country, we develop beneficial relationships that expand our opportunities to learn what works for other cities and share our successes with them. Now, as our economy is beginning to improve, is the best time for these investments.

I believe it is imperative that our City Council work together to discover the best solutions to the challenges that face us, and education and collaboration are tools we use to seek out the best solutions. Conferences such as the one in Arizona forge stronger relationships and cooperation among the council members, while recognizing that discussions and disagreements are normal, appropriate and productive when managed respectfully.
