Last January a special task force was formed to evaluate our community’s needs and funding options.  On Monday, May 5, 2008, the committee presented its recommendations to the City Council for their consideration.  The task force included citizens, city staff, former elected leaders, and current elected leaders.   Following were the participants:
  • Dave Wright, Chair      RTB Chair, School Board, StandUp Blue Springs
  • Sissy Reed                   City Council, Realtor
  • Lyle Shaver                 City Council, Property Manager
  • Sheila Solon                 City Council, Account Coordinator

The task force unanimously recommended a series of proposals to be considered by our citizens in an August 2008 election.  The complete task force presentation included recommendations and solutions for a necessary sewer plant expansion, funding for the widening of Woods Chapel Road, improvements for the intersection of Duncan Road and Woods Chapel/R.D. Mize, extending Moreland School Road to Liggett Road, improving the Colbern Road and Highway 7 Intersection, expansion of Vesper Hall, construction of a community center, construction of an indoor/outdoor aquatics center, improvements to Young Park, Keystone Park, Hidden Valley Park, Pink Hill Park, Grounds Park, and acquisition and development of a new park complex in the southern part of the city.  The proposal also provided for a dedicated funding source for the long term maintenance of our parks system.Following the presentation to the Mayor and Council, support for the proposals was voiced by several councilmen.  However, Mayor Ross spoke against the dedicated park sales tax, which would eliminate most of the amenities listed above.
