Voters Overwhelmingly Approve Bond and Sales Tax Issues

by Jeff Quibell 6. August 2008 16:37

On August 5, 2008 the voters of Blue Springs and the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District approved three “no tax increase” bond issues and one “sales tax” issue.

The fire district’s sales tax issue passed by an overwhelming 73% majority, in spite of the public opposition from Mayor Ross and Councilmen Fowler, Solon, and Shaver.  Let us hope that those who expressed opposition to this issue will respect the will of the voters and work together with our fire district for the good of the community.

I want to personally thank our fire fighters for visiting over 6,800 homes to advocate for all four issues and to answer questions from our citizens.  We are truly blessed in Blue Springs to have firefighters willing to risk their lives every day for our safety and still take their personal time to visit so many homes to get the word out about these important issues.

Information about the election issues is available at http://www.aboutbluesprings.com/category/Elections.aspx.

You should always feel free to contact your elected officials about this or any issue regarding your city and to let them know your opinion on issues they are considering. But the fact still stands that one issue did not even make it to the people of Blue Springs so they could vote on it thanks to our new Mayor.  Lets not forget that he squelched the recommendation of the "Renew the Blue Committee" and the City Council by not allowing the "Park Improvement" Issue to be put on the Ballot. That still needs to be rectified and we the citizens of Blue Springs need to be given the opportunity to vote on it.  Based on the other "tax" vote, I have not doubt that the voters would vote for it's approval also.  We want a waterpark in Blue Springs, and the rest of our Parks updated so they are safe for our kids.  It is sad that if we want to got to a waterpark we have to go to Independence, Lees Summit and Kansas).

Renew the Blue.  I am a 20 year citizen of BSMO and very proud to be one.  I participated in what I considered to be visionary work as an RTB member.  Our goal was to envision the city and it's needs and wants over the next 20 years.  To "UPDATE" the city if you will.  Jeannie Lauer, a brilliant and talented woman, gave much of herself and her time to this project.  I spent much of my time in session listening to "ideas" that have been discussed over and over and over for years, thanks to that process.  I felt it was obvious what the people wanted.

Each person in that process brought the voices of their personal communities.  Those ideas were put into the RTB plan.  I am extremely proud of the plan.  To stray from that plan completely and/or ignore it is a slap in the face of those who participated, the citizens, and the previous Mayor Steve Steiner.

I wish to voice my distaste with the opposition that Jeannie seems to be experiencing.  It appears that those associated with the RTB plan receive the most opposition.  Issues such as the water park are "important to the citizens" as well as other aspects of the RTB plan.  That is why RTB put the water park as well as the park improvement suggestion into the plan.

I don't expect everything in the plan to materialize.  I admit I expected Mayor Ross to accept the process, as did others of RTB, and give it just and honorable consideration as it truly represents the citizens desires.  After all isn't that his job?

Blue Springs is an open and freindly and intelligent community.  We support those who support us.  The people of BSMO deserve to be heard.  Every citizen is encouraged to speak out and be heard.

I encourage anyone and everyone, resident or not, to read the Renew the Blue Plan.  It's on the city's website www.bluespringsgov.com.  Use it and speak out with knowledge.
