Police Conduct Additional Underage Drinking Enforcement Actions

Department efforts focus to prevent the selling alcohol to minors under the age of 21 years old

Blue Springs, Mo - Case Number: 2008-11658, 2008-11660, and 2009-00220

In a continuing effort to help protect our children, and to enforce the underage drinking laws, the Blue Springs Police Department conducted two additional underage drinking enforcement actions.

On December 30, 2008 between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. the Blue Springs Police Department sent an underage young man into sixteen different establishments that sell alcoholic beverages. This young man was instructed to present his actual identification, and to be honest about his age if asked. Of the sixteen businesses contacted two sold alcoholic beverages to the 18 year old young man.

The second operation was conducted on January 7, 2009 between the hours of 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM. On this occasion the Blue Springs Police Department sent two underage persons, one 18 year old female and one 18 year old male, into eleven businesses that sell alcohol beverages. In this action, as in the one conducted on December 30, 2008, both subjects were instructed to use their actual identification, and be honest if asked about their age. On this date only one business sold alcoholic beverages to the subjects.

According to the Blue Springs Municipal code, number 600.200, No person shall sell or supply intoxicating liquor, or permit same to be sold or supplied, to a habitual drunkard or to any person who is intoxicated or appears to be in a state of intoxication. Intoxicating liquor shall not be given, sold or otherwise supplied to any person under the age of twenty-one (21) years, but this shall not apply to the supplying of intoxicating liquor to a person under such age for medicinal purposes only or to supplying or giving by the parent or guardian of such person or to the administering of such intoxicating liquor to such person by a physician.  (Ord. No. 4012 §1, 12-18-06)

A total of two Municipal Court Complaints were issued on December 30, 2008. The persons receiving the court complaints were Janelle Fedo, and Buster Roper. Their court dates were set for January 17, 2009, at 8:30 a.m. A total of one Municipal Court Complaint was issued on January 7, 2009 to Larry Howell. His court date was set for February 21st at 8:30 a.m.

These operations are a continuing effort to enforce the underage drinking laws supported by a grant from the Missouri Department of Safety. Blue Springs Police Chief Wayne McCoy feels very strongly that the enforcement of the underage drinking laws is important not only to protect our children but to protect the general public as well. If you have any questions or comments please contact Sergeant Joe Fanara at (816) 228-0156.
