Welcome

Please take some of your time to read the February newsletter and we encourage you to visit our web site at www.bluespringsgov.com/parks to see what we have to offer you, your family and friends.

*What's Special About Special Events

Director, Roscoe Righter
By Roscoe Righter, Director
Our Parks and Recreation Department offers many Special Events each year. They are generally free to the public, appeal to a wide range of ages, are of short duration, and you normally don't have to register in advance to attend. They also require months of planning; many staff and volunteer hours are needed to plan and host, and one or more sponsors are needed to help pay for the cost. With limited facilities and limited staff, this is one of the areas of programming that we can provide and excel in. With today's economic conditions, we expect our residents to be staying close to home, but still looking for activities and entertainment.....

*Sports Expo

Sports ExpoBlue Springs Parks and Recreation will be sponsoring the 17th Annual Youth Sports and Recreation Expo, Saturday, January 31, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This event will be held at Adams Pointe Conference Center, 1400 NE Coronado Drive. The Expo is a great opportunity for kids, parents, coaches and area residents to register for spring and summer programs. Some of the programs will be baseball, softball, football, basketball, BMX, martial arts, gymnastics, fencing and a variety of activities and resources to learn more about. It also gives everyone involved with sports and recreation a chance to meet with the various representatives. One of the biggest attractions will be the appearances of T-Bones Mascot Sizzle, KC Royals Slugger and the Chiefs KC Wolf. We hope to see your family and friends out at Adams Pointe Conference Center enjoying this time saving and informative family event.

*"The Gift"

Jackie Capranica
Rarely a day goes by that we don't hear someone talking about the economy, price of gas, the war or other issues that hit close to home and affect daily living. Everyone seems to be tightening their belt and getting back to basics. This can often mean bad news for the Philanthropic world of giving. Fortunately at Vesper Hall, giving is still going strong. Amazing people are willing to give as the need increases due to the economy.

*Trees-Economic Value #1

Winter Windbreaks:
Conifers on the windward side of homes mean energy savings in the winter. By breaking the force of frigid air movement, a windbreak can reduce winter fuel consumption by 10 - 25 percent. An additional benefit can be the deflection of snow away from driveways and roads, reducing snow removal cost and energy consumption.

*Health and Fitness Tips:

EAT MORE: Before you get too excited, understand that when you eat, it is not how much you eat, but what you eat. If you find that getting fit and eating less food is too hard, add more of the right food into your diet. Great options include an orange, hard- boiled egg, small broiled chicken breast, and fresh vegetables such as carrots and celery sticks. If you have a craving for something sweet, many delicious options are available such as Weight Watchers cheesecakes or Chocolate Eclairs. Getting fit does not mean total deprivation. Stay fit, be healthy.

*Quotes to Live By:

"Play is where our lives live. When we slip into play, we slip into self-experience where we can afford to 'let go' and respond to ourselves, to others, and to the environment in an unpredictable, personal way."

-Levy
