Why Block Economic Development?

DSC04405 As citizens, it is our responsibility and privilege to elect our representatives. We choose those that we believe will most accurately represent our beliefs and ideals, and those who will look out for our best interest. Once elected, we have a right to expect our leaders to speak to the issues that come before them in a straightforward manner, without attempting to twist or misconstrue facts. Our most recent Blue Springs city council meeting is an unfortunate example of how issues and details can be manipulated in an attempt to inaccurately spin the facts.

Let’s look first at the discussion coming from the District 3 Councilmen. The city’s check registers are a typical item on the consent agenda. Councilman Solon requested this item be removed from the consent agenda for further discussion. Her concern, and apparently Councilman Fowler’s as well, centered on reimbursements for business lunches and dinners, and the policy of how those reimbursements should be handled. Most successful organizations and businesses require some level of business conducted outside of the office, or in this case, city hall. Perhaps her concerns are indicative of the type of business Councilman Solon does, but for most of us in business, meeting with clients or prospective clients over lunch or dinner is a common practice. It is entirely appropriate that staff members should be reimbursed for doing their job at our request. Of course, proper documentation and procedures must be followed. We are fortunate to have a talented and dedicated financial department who oversees expenditures.

As I watched the remainder of last week’s meeting a common, reoccurring theme began to appear, again with the same two councilmen. Councilman Solon advocated reducing the funding to the Blue Springs Economic Development Corporation by 10% or $30,000, suggesting that the EDC budget should be cut because of the current hard economic times. However, I recall this same suggestion from her several years ago before these hard times. What is the true motivation here? Why are the District 3 representatives so opposed to economic development?

These recommendations appear to be attempts to slow economic development in Blue Springs. The frequent no votes coming from our District 3 councilmen often focus on economic development issues. While the developments occurring in various parts of our city are designed to increase revenue and help keep our taxes low over the long term, these votes seem designed to impede those efforts and keep our citizens spending their tax dollars in other municipalities. Is this truly the will of the residents in District 3?

I encourage people to speak their mind, and believe that a spirited, open discussion will bring a better end result for all. Contact your councilmen and speak your mind. You can watch the meeting at http://bit.ly/bscc20090908.

I have repeatedly requested review of the status regarding completion of Adams Dairy Pkwy. up to Pink Hill Rd (39thSt.).  The amount of traffic is steadily increasing, while this old section of Jellison Rd. remains unimproved.  Currently this stretch is being heavily traveled by tandom axle dump trucks removing excavated material from the lake park at the intersection of I-70 & Adams Dairy.  This old 2 lane blacktop cannot withstand that kind of constant heavy vehicle traffic, disregarding the emense increase in regular traffic that it indures.  I and my neighbors seriously request that the priority for this road improvement be raised to the level of No.1, for the safety of the residents that live here, as well as the drivers that now are using this road for daily access to I-70.  The City should put a counter across this road for one week and you will see what we mean!

I would be happy to comment on this.  I am happy with Ms Solon and Fowlers suggestion to lower the budget.  Maybe if more council members did this taxes could be lowered.  As to blocking economic progress.  I haven't seen much progress in Blue Springs over the last 5 years.  Can you tell us what companies have relocated to Blue Springs based on this wonderful Economic Development Corporation?  I think there should be some visibility?  Don't put out comments about how they are doing a disservice uunless you validate that statement by telling us what value we get for the $300,000 a year we are spending.

Our previous council members continually approved low income housing projects and multi family homes in the community.  You tell us what economic development has occurred in Blue Springs in the last 4- 5 years.  I see nothing of value.  We have continually brought in more people with a lower income per child and weakened our schools. It would be nice to see just a few major employers enter Blue Springs.  All we get is retail shops in strip malls that sit empty for years.  I don't know who is doing the planning for Blue Springs but they are doing a terrible job in my opinion.

What this city needs is leaders with a vision for the future.  I am just sad that we didn't have that long ago.

I even offered several times to serve on the planning commission.  I was told or previous mayor didn't wnat me on the commission.

I think you should look in the mirror and ask what happened to the city while you were a council member.  I believe you will find that Blue Springs has gone backwards over that period.  That is my opinion.

The one good thing you are doing it this news letter.  It helps keep people aware of issues.  Thank you for that.

I would be very interested in knowing why Councilman Solon and Fowler requested that the city's check registers be removed from the consent agenda for further discussion.  Maybe there is something to hide like Lavish Lunches, Dinners, Entertainment and who knows what else at the cost to the Blue Springs residents.
As for the development of Blue Springs, I don’t know who has been on the planning committee in the past, but the way that 7hwy and 40hwy was developed is a mess, or in simple terms Ghetto.  Take Wal-Mart for example, I am still wondering why Wal-Mart was allowed to build three times in Blue Springs and abandon the old buildings.
I am glad that the city is trying to revive old areas of Blue Springs, but being realistic, I think these areas should be made back into residential. The land should be condemned, buildings/parking removed, rezoned for single dwelling homes and have a developer build new homes.
Going forward our city planners should require business to maintain the property or lose it back to the city, and then Blue Springs would not be in the condition it is in today.

That's too bad, because the economic development benefits everyone in Blue Springs, regardless of the area.  I hope it's not a petty district thing.  I'm beginning to wonder.

Walmart, Home Depot, Target, Taco Bell, Panda Express, two sushi bars...Asian Tiger and Miyabi, an awesome new fitness center by Side Pockets is going in, Culvers, Castle car wash, Harley Hot Rods, Texas Road house, a new Sonic, a new McDonald's, Village Gardens, and the list continues on and on.  Soon we will have clothing stores for the first time ever in the 20+ years I've lived here.  Seems Independence made out like a bandit getting money from myself, my wife, and my two children for tose items during those years. Now magnify that times 50+ thousand people!

Efforts are being made for a medical research park on ADP.  It looks promising.

Have mistakes been made?  Yes they have.

Has progress haulted?  No.

Will progress continue?  Yes.

We are the 5th largest city in the state.  How did we get there?  By accident?

No.  It was because we, the citizens of BSMO, expressed what we wanted and the city listened. The city didn't make it easy for that growth to happen either.  We have a reputation of being one of the worst cities to deal with when it comes to allowing new businesses to land in our town. Yet, we are still growing.  We must ask why this is happening and look from all angles with an open mind.  Could it be because we have made Blue Springs a desireable community in which to live and build.  Maybe, if we lighten the restrictions a bit and learn to do business like the big boys do, we can benefit from those newer more abundant revenues and we won't have to raise our taxes.  It's just a thought.

Change is inevitable and Growth is manageable.  I urge eveyone to embrace the change and help direct it's impact on our community in a constructive manner.
